The ‘three little maids from school’- eighteen-year-olds spending their gap year travelling the world- decide to address their want of financial resources by smuggling drugs from one South American country to another. A forced landing on a remote airstrip deep in the Amazon basin is a life-changing event for them, putting them in the hands of a brutal regime that rules a quasi-state calling itself ‘The Republic’, in which slavery is both legal and normal. Arrested, tried, sentenced to death, taken out for execution, and reprieved in the course of a single afternoon, they soon find out that their lives depend on their being successfully trained and sold as sex-slaves.
Two of the girls- Poppy and Suzie- try to make the best of the situation, accepting the guidance of Jennifer Jane Lewinsky, their trainer and mentor and a wealthy citizen of The Republic. In the ensuing days they tour brothels, a slave-market, a stable for human ponies, a whipmakers workshop, and the home of the President, with its trio of exquisitely beautiful and meticulously trained harem slaves. They watch games in which runners are shot down with tranquilizing darts, and football played between teams of naked women, the losers being literally ‘thrown to the troops’.
They visit the terrifying ‘Hall of Punishments’, and watch convicted criminals paying the ultimate penalty. Always in bondage, often paraded naked in public, treated with drugs and hormones to enhance their desire and need for sex, their bodies are available to masters, mistresses and fellow slaves alike. They find themselves in a land of breath-taking contrasts. One the one hand, a life of luxury, of sexual fulfillment, of warm and loving friendships beckons. On the other, grinding manual labour or painful, even mutilating and capital punishments await those who fail to play the roles prescribed for them. As the girls try their best to accept and enjoy their new lives, they realize that it’s impossible to take only the pleasure, without suffering some of the pain.
