Beverly traveled from Southern California to Madrid, Spain, at nineteen. The Spanish class she was taking at the local community college did little to quench her desire to visit Spain. She worked as a salesperson in a clothing store by day and as a cashier in a deli by night to save enough money to purchase a one-month intensive language course with a home stay. Within those thirty days, she met several amazing people and was offered a job teaching English. She returned to California five years later.
My Journey to Ithaca: Metamorphosis is a collection of four short stories highlighting some of Beverly’s most formidable growth experiences as a young adult exploring the world. From the life lessons to the sights, smells and sounds, she relates each detail from memory. Journey to the Present is the only exception. While immersed in the revision process, she found the journal she kept in 1992. The entries allowed her to add further details about who helped her on Tanjung Pinang, the color of the cargo boat, Eddie’s appearance and the weather. In The Ithaca Compass, she describes a night on the town in Madrid, Spain. She lived many wild Madrileño nights during the five years she spent in Spain. This short story is a representation of every night as opposed to a recount of one particular night. Except for a few instances, she has changed the names of the incredible people who encouraged her, guided her and walked with her during the early stages of her journey to Ithaca.
