Newsday and the Yonkers Herald-Statesman were among the first newspapers to report the demise of a huge cigarette smuggling ring in 1969. Police, tax agents and Brooklyn District Attorney's office personnel also divulged details of the crime. In one instance a truck carrying smuggled cigarettes was pulled over in Maryland.
