I am an earth and life scientist with sprinklings of law and bioethics. I am also a feminist.
After secondary school, I first enrolled in German language and literature at the University of Leiden, quit after the first semester, then worked in tourism and hospitality in Amsterdam. In my mid-twenties, I returned to school and became a geologist and marine biogeochemist (earth and life sciences).
I started writing stories and articles when I was still in primary school. As a teenager, I sent a letter to a national weekly, and it was published. In my early twenties, I sent a letter to one of the writers of women’s weekly Libelle and submitted an item to women’s weekly Viva. Both contributions were used. After that, I regularly sent letters to the editor of Dutch daily De Volkskrant, responding to articles in the newspaper. Almost all were published, most of them in the Saturday edition.
I later produced some quirky flash fiction which was great fun to do. It is somewhat reminiscent of the work of Spike Milligan and Donald Barthelme. I am currently working on "Our Future", the follow-up to "We need to talk about this”, which I wrote in a great hurry and reads very well but has some shortcomings. The latter is available as e-book and as paperback. Anyone who purchased "We need to talk about this” can contact me and get the e-book of “Our future” at no charge. It will be much more complete.
I became self-employed a long time ago, and for example wrote for international science and technology magazines at EUR 55 per hour until I relocated to Britain. I've also been carrying out studies, involved in some graduate teaching and editing scientific manuscripts. I have served as associate editor and editor-in-chief of scientific newsletters, and as board member of organizations for science and technology professionals.
I am now based in the UK, but have previously lived and worked in my native the Netherlands and the United States.
