I first read The Smuggler's Wife for fun---the name intrigued me. But being a high school English teacher, I decided to use this story in the classroom for an exercise in creative writing. This is a classic example of what is good in a short story: Catchy title, likeable characters, good plot, and an ending that leaves you wondering what will happen next. I found this story a real bargain --free!--and hope that Ms. Lane will produce another short story in this genre.

If anything annoys me, it's reading a retelling of a book by someone who thinks he/she is a "reviewer." (especially by someone who has retold the stories of 33 books.) That said, I found THE SMUGGLER'S WIFE to be a well written, fast-paced story. It's told in an intelligent way that connected me to Abigal and her moral dilemma of either trusting her husband, or facing economic ruin. I own other books by this author and have found them to be compelling page-turners.
