(This is a coda to my science fiction novel, Which Art In Hope. I wrote it principally to crystallize some thoughts that were central to the political theses of the novel. It turned out to be more of an education than I'd expected -- not about the political explorations in the novel, but about the ways of love and loss.)

"What on Hope is that?" Richard Fiammare propped himself on an elbow as Victoria emerged from the lavatory. The whine of the Cerenkov drive that pushed Liberty's Torch through space surged briefly and subsided.
