Not Even There

By Jason Sharp

Betrayal is sneaky. Sometimes, a person doesn't know they've deceived someone until it's too late, or maybe they do and don’t want to admit to it. If a person betrays someone in front of their face, it's a safe bet that they never gave a shit any way. At least that’s what I thought.

I found out how cunning deception could be at sixteen. I can’t even gaze at water. It’s a cause to all of my thoughts of disloyalty. After my near drowning at the party, everything changed in ways no one could have thought. Least of all me.

It started with Libby. She never knew I existed, at least not as a potential boyfriend or any kind of dating material. She barely even spoke to me. She glanced at me a lot, but most of the time her disinterested expression just proved she was looking through me and not at me, but that was okay too. Those blue eyes made it all worth it.
