1876 - Viscount Sir James Bryce, British statesman, author, world traveler and mountaineer makes a solo attempt at Mt. Ararat. He returns with what he claims is a fragment of the ark of Noah and extensive drawings in a notebook.
1878 - Before members of the Royal Geographical Society, Viscount Bryce becomes embroiled in a debate about his finds with Sir Henry Rawlinson, renowned discoverer and decipherer of the great Behistun carvings of Darius the Great. Viscount Bryce receives little support and resigns in disgrace.
