Uncle Jasper, my grandmother's brother, wasn't a well-liked guy, but we all had to show up to his funeral anyway. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why. After an hour on the phone with my mother, I finally conceded. I would go to Uncle Jasper's funeral and be as nice as humanly possible to his very young, very annoying widow Sabrina, who's real name was actually Bernice. My brother Drake was just as dumbfounded as I was as to why it was so important to our mother. We all knew she was never going to see a dime of his vast fortune.
