“Damn! Damn! Damn!” She hit the steering wheel and then chided herself for losing patience over something she could not control. Up hills and down hills and out in the flat for mile after mile and all she could get was an occasional few seconds of ROAMING. She would pick it up to dial and as quickly it would be gone.
Her right leg stiffened and the needle slipped past the mark between eighty and ninety. She turned the cold air directly on her face and looked in the rearview mirror. As far back as she could see there was nothing.
Thirty-three years of nothing. Well maybe not thirty three. Just the last . . . what? Seemed like forever since the last time she was truly happy.
Forever of nothing.
Ahead was the same, an asphalt ribbon turning into a line that disappeared into a heat haze. But in that haze she saw a mixture of hope and fear. Even though the fear turned her stomach, the conscious awareness of the lack of nothing gave her hope.
