Teach dealt her a smack that sent her sprawling to the floor. Israel fisted his hands at his side, fighting the urge to help her. He knew better than to get in the captain’s way. She had managed well enough up to this point. She peered up through the mess of chestnut curls, blood trailing from her lip and pinned the captain with a glare.

“Ye’ll not be takin’ me into that house as yer whore.” She pulled her feet under her and raised herself shakily. Her voice was hard as granite. “Ye’ll marry me now or kill me where Ah stand.”

The captain, eyed her as if she were an errant crewman seconds away from the lash. Then he said through his teeth. “Take care what choices you give me, Annie. I’ve killed for less.”
