My Ex-Girlfriend’s Mom

Getting between two screeching women is usually a bad idea—unless you do not have a choice. From the start, it seemed like things were always out of my control, even when I tried to act for the best of everybody involved. Vicky, my girlfriend, tended to drink way too much, and then something usually set her off. Sometimes, she didn’t like the way another woman was looking at her. Other times? I don’t know. It was hard to tell what true motivations are after half a bottle of tequila.

Recently, she got herself into a slap fight at a bar. Unfortunately, I had to try and pry her off the poor woman she had attacked. The bouncers wouldn’t do it; they were laughing and pointing most of the time. The rest of the bar patrons were too busy yelling, Cat Fight! Cat Fight! Cat Fight! I had enough. Mostly, I had enough of her, and I was trying to think of how I could break up with her. Also, I had enough of the bar life, of drinking, and of partying. I was more than ready to move on—to concentrate on getting good grades and finishing graduate school. That night, I was about to tell her all of that, sternly, but the night ended with one of the bartenders telling me that she’d passed out in the woman’s bathroom, and that I should take her home.
