Theseus tore his gaze from the city before them in response to his wife Theolonia's gentle query. She laid a soft hand on his shoulder—carefully avoiding the ugly welt, now greenish yellow instead of black and blue, on his arm where she'd walloped him last time they sparred.
That walled city, perched at the beginning of the highlands and gleaming gold in the bright sun, overlooked a sweeping plain on one side and a broad river valley on the other. Only about fifty feet above its surroundings, that elevation was sufficient to keep the city safe from spring floods—and give them an advantage over invading armies.
