Part 1

The day was hot and sunny, but I still had to go one more mile. One more mile until I reached home. It was a long hot walk, but I had to do it. My car had broken down in Mayfield, a small town twenty miles from Bloomfield, where I lived. It was Sunday afternoon and all the service stations were closed and there was no traffic on the Interstate so I couldn't hitch a ride.

I had collapsed from exhaustion nine miles back and was out for about an hour before I came to.
