The lead Land Rover swerved to a stop, and Abu Rifai jumped out.
“What’s he doing?” Linda Rhodes asked Taleb, her driver. “I was hoping to cover twenty more miles before nightfall.”
Rather than answer, Taleb nodded at the sight in the rear-view mirror.
Linda swung around. A giant cloud of wind-driven sand barreled down on them from behind. They were not on a sand dune style of desert, but the storm came from the southeast off the Arabian Peninsula. The wind lifted dust and debris some four thousand feet into the atmosphere and turned the sky orange. “We need to pitch camp,” she said to the men riding with her, but they were already slipping out of their seatbelts.
