I finally put my chopsticks down and used a fork to round up the remaining scattered pieces of the fried rice breakfast. Oh well. Actually I'd done pretty good considering my lack of practice since my Japanese days of yore. Which was where I'd had my first fried rice and fell in love with the Orient. I glanced back over my map, reread the note, then re-folded both and stuffed them into a shirt pocket.

Breakfast normally an anathema for me, save several cups of black coffee, but the fresh, cool air of Chiang Mai had boosted my appetite as well as my spirits. After the scorching, sandy winds of Saudi Arabia, my present ex-pat home, and the stifling hot diesel humidity of Bangkok, the ancient northern Thai Capital was a welcome change, literally as well as figuratively.
