Hillard gives us a splendid vicarious adventure that ranges from enduring blizzards with only a tent for shelter to the elation of observing a leopard with cubs. There is a sympathetic portrait of the villagers and their isolation. Neither hazardous climbs and river crossings nor acute physical discomfort and mental strain fazed the intrepid Hillard and Jackson.
. . . This combination of wit and insight makes Hillard both an ideal expedition member and a first-class storyteller. Her description of the years spent on the snow leopard project is alternately funny and inspiring. As a book, “Vanishing Tracks” is a pleasure. As a document about people and their love for the beauty and mystery of the natural world, it’s a gem.
