Chapter 1

Frederick Adler worked in the field, banging an angry hoe into the soil, when he saw Carina come out of the house. He knew where his foster-sister was going: to the stream’s misty pool, to sit and touch the water and make her wishes to the earth and sky, as much like a prayer as anyone could risk in a time of outlawed churches. And though he had no soothing words, he knew he could still protect her; so, he dropped his hoe and hurried to hide nearby. There, in the lush, green woods, he sat, watching over her, when a strange and sudden loud complaint brought them both to darting their eyes.

Frederick wanted Carina to head for home, but she rose and walked toward the commotion; so, touching his dagger, he followed her to the rocky ridge where he saw her stop and look down in great surprise.
