‘Alex – Alex, come on, where are you?’ Mummy called from the kitchen.
Mummy called again and didn’t hear a sound, so she crept out of the kitchen into the hallway and peered into the living room. Alex was nowhere to be seen.
‘Where are you hiding darling?’ Mummy called. ‘Are you behind the curtains?’
Sometimes Alex, who was all of two years old, would hide behind the curtains that hung down to the floor at the end of the living room. Mummy listened, and then she heard Alex. She was round the back of the big chair in the corner near the other window.
‘Gone’ was all Alex said.
‘What’s gone darling?’ asked Mummy.
‘Fumbonk – gone’ said Alex, who came out of her hiding place, still looking everywhere around the room.
‘What’s a Fumbonk?’ asked Mummy, who had never heard the word before.
