For several minutes, Melanie and Jane walked through the snow in companionable silence. Large, soft flakes whispered all around her, reflecting the high-pressure sodium glow of the streetlight.

There’s no silence like the silence of a snowy night, Melanie mused. She felt like she could walk with Jane forever, just listening to the soft crunch of their boots. Not everyone was good at that kind of silence, but Jane excelled at it. She didn’t feel the need to fill the air with meaningless babble.

Melanie looked at the girl walking next to her. Even with her face mostly shrouded by her fake fur hood, Jane was stunningly beautiful. She had long, thick lashes framing her brown eyes, which somehow looked even more feminine next to her short-cropped black hair. Not everyone could pull off a haircut like Jane’s, but she owned it. Jane had the courage to look tough and eschew the trappings of traditional femininity. Melanie grimaced. That sounded like something her women’s studies professor would say.

“Hey, what’s on your mind?” Jane called out brightly. Melanie realized with dismay that she had been staring at her companion for a considerable amount of time. She flushed with embarrassment and stared at her feet. “I just . . . I like your hair.”
