Girl at the Window

Lin gazed out the big picture window of her fifth floor apartment. The scene below took in the busy street, cars racing to try to beat the stoplight, row upon row of parked cars of all makes and colors, large and small, a few bedraggled trees reaching up trying to import some vestige of nature into the concrete jungle. People rushed along, some carrying briefcases, some with shopping bags, some pushing strollers. It was a typical downtown scene. The noise, however, did not reach up to her. The double-glazed windows shut it out. It was like she was looking at a scene on television, with no sound. It was almost unbelievable.
