Quarks? Leptons? Bosons? Those who hunt ghosts might have never imagined that clues to the existence of paranormal phenomena could be found in the world of the subatomic particle. Physicists who look for the all-encompassing Theory of Everything (TOE) – an integrated framework that joins together the four fundamental forces of gravity, electromagnetism, and the weak and strong nuclear forces, may never have imagined that the behavior of particles might give suggestions as to the potential existence of paranormal phenomena.
In order to understand the implications of this, it is important to understand exactly what the term “paranormal” means. Does it refer to ghosts? Demons? Spirits? Despite the popularity of current television programming, “paranormal” does not strictly involve ghostly phenomenon. According to Wikipedia, “Paranormal is a general term (coined ca. 1915–1920) that designates experiences that lie outside the range of normal experience or scientific explanation or that indicates phenomena that are understood to be outside of science's current ability to explain or measure.” So then, the term paranormal really refers to any phenomena, which we are unable to scientifically quantify. Hold this notion in the back of your mind as we take a detour and discuss some real scientific theories and experiments which are being conducted in an effort to explain what is “normal” and what is “paranormal.”
When worlds collide, they often do so in a way that turns paradigms upside down. The recent interest in the paranormal community into quantum theory (although not recent for these two authors!) has sparked a growing field of cutting edge researchers attempting to understand if the old axiom “as above, so below” also may apply to “as small, so big.” Can the behavior of particles at the quantum level give us any real ideas as to what happens at the cosmic level? And, more importantly, can this behavior also help us understand what a ghost is, where a UFO comes from, or how someone can remotely view a military installation thousands of miles away….all concepts which are “paranormal” due to the fact that there is no current scientific explanation for these phenomena?
