This short story was first published in 2007 in Lunch Hour Stories, a print magazine, now defunct. Many thanks to G.M .Andrico, who gathered the folk tales included in this story from the inhabitants of Padernello, Italy. The Padernello Castle, pictured on the cover by Alberto Bruschi, exists and is enjoying a new life as a tourist attraction and social center. The Gray Stag does not exist. Thanks also go to Anne Toledo, author of the novel A Return to Sanditon, on Smashwords and Kindle, for her encouragement and good advice.
