It was another slow day at BugBean Coffee, and Tammy grew increasingly bored watching the clock tick by. Their location, conveniently next to a highway on-ramp, was great for business in the mornings as commuters pulled through for lattes and dashed in for muffins and croissants. But traffic slowed at 9:30, and was dead entirely by 10. By noon, the place was as silent as a tomb, and that’s when Tammy would clock in for her afternoon shift, taking over for the dog-tired, but flush with tip money, morning shift. The smell of coffee and rich pastries filled the otherwise empty air, and after wiping down the smooth tables and readjusting the chairs, the coffeeshop felt alone and empty.

Quiet jazz came over the speakers, and after cleaning the same counter clean for thirty minutes, Tammy found herself bored out of her mind. Vincent, the owner, kept to himself in the office during this time, working on receipts and work orders and paperwork. He would pop out occasionally for a drink, and Tammy would scurry to find something to look busy, but her heart wasn’t in it; he never made any comment, because he knew just as well as she did how dead it was.
