Chapter one

She sat staring at the old book. Its pages were ancient in form, but life burst vibrant from the fading words. Her father was dead two days now, his pyre still smouldering, his charred bones visible through the ashes - ashes that marked the end of the village’s Defender. So the people thought. They believed their days were now numbered as a brief blink before disaster. When the Overlord found out the Defender was dead he would visit his wrath upon them all. He had died with no male heir, therefore they believed, no Defender.
