I Just Had to Come Down Here Once

Sean Monaghan

Why is it, Bo thought looking at the crypt wall, that the ribs are called a cage? As if the organs within are prisoners, untamed and prepared to wreak havoc should they escape captivity. Dangerous and clawed beasts, ready to eviscerate the unwary, predators that must be locked away should their instincts take over.

In reality, Bo knew, they were delicate, soft and vulnerable items. The cage was not to keep them in, but to keep dangers out.

He closed up the crypt door and bolted it, drew the curtain across the wall, then wheeled up the bookcase, nestling it into the gap between the others. Not that anyone ever dared to come down here, not to his basement den, but there was an elegance to the wall, the three four foot bookshelves, all wheeled, with decades and centuries of the carefully wielded prose of Dickens, Stevenson, Thoreau, Trollope, Dillard, Rushdie and, well, and hundreds of others, all forming a wall between the den's air and the sealed capsules that contained stories only he would ever know.
