It was late at night, just as the dark was beginning to lighten, and the pack were getting ready to go to sleep. Tyler, the alpha, prowled the area, doing the rounds of the forest to make sure nothing would interrupt the pack during the night.

The fire was still slightly smoldering. Eric was on night watch tonight, it was up to him to make sure the fire stayed in that nice little niche between extinguished and fully lit.

Tyler crawled through the bush, his heightened senses looking, sniffing, listening for anything out of the ordinary. Something doesn’t quite feel right he thought, but he couldn’t put his finger on exactly what it was. Just to be safe, he did an extra round of the area around the camp. Still, he couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary and chalked it up to nerves.

When Tyler got back to the camp, the wolves were all settling in to sleep. Most had found their beds, made from soft tree branches covered in leaves underneath trees or rocks. Eric, on watch tonight, slowly circled the fire. He nodded to Tyler as he walked over.

“Hey Eric, be extra vigilant out there tonight, will you? Something just doesn’t feel right to me.”

“Will do boss, I’ll do an extra set of rounds each hour, make sure it’s all good.”

Tyler nodded and headed towards his bed. It had been a long day and he didn’t want the company of any other wolves that night, so he just headed off himself. He found his bed, half hidden under the trunk of an old cedar that had fallen years ago. The bottom half of the trunk had rotted away, leaving a nice covered area. It was a premium location for a bed, as when it rained it was never wet under the tree, and perfectly fitting for the alpha of the pack.

Tyler settled in and went to sleep. The pack had spent the day hunting. It had been a hard hunt, there wasn’t very much prey around this time of year. They had found enough food to last them a few days, but there would have to be another hunt soon. Hopefully the next hunt goes better Tyler thought as he drifted off to sleep.
