For John Nottley. The biggest presence in my life for as long as I can remember. Also the tallest.
I was five when I left my home in Ireland and came to England. A choppy sea juggled me between my seat and the toilet for the duration of the journey - one which I now know to have taken around eight hours; as opposed to the twelve weeks, I would tell anyone who cared to listen at the time. I had tasked myself with keeping the vessel afloat and given that I had an unhealthy fear of the sea and everything in it, this was a feat I could only accomplish by sitting under my seat and staying perfectly still between my trips to the bathroom. Even at such a young age, I had an outstanding grasp of weight distribution and nautical engineering.
