Patty adjusted her breather and looked around for Brett. She was laying down at the edge of the river scarp, looking out at the reserve that spread over the flat land in the river's bend. Horseshoe Bend Reserve. How original, she thought. How very rural.

Out on the grass there were two dozen hotrods: T-buckets, Mercurys, Buicks, Cadillacs. A big variety of them, from some that were polished and almost original, to others that had big fiberglass intakes on the hood and chopped canopies, or - the T-buckets - were stripped right back to the very basics. They were parked around the base of the quarter mile track that led up the steepest part of the reserve, right from just above the level of the water to the top of the old river terrace. The same height as Patty right now.
