I was born cursed.
When I came into the world, my mother held me up, looked at me under the full moon's light, and bellowed to the stars. She knew what the lines upon my skin meant. But she refused to let me—her one and only daughter—become another casualty of the curse.
So my mother, the witch, made up her mind to change my destiny.
She threw bones and blessed the birds, performed all manner of spellwork, until she at last understood what was necessary to remove my fate.
My mother is not a wicked witch. She is only a mother, and a mother does for her child what she must do. Still, her plan was wicked enough: the fate could only be fully removed from me if it was sewn into another person.
