Chapter 1

I was young and innocent and didn't know much about women and love. And then there was Carol Dulaney. Carol had recently married the father of my best friend, Jason. Jason’s mother had died when he was very young—auto accident or something gruesome like that.

A few weeks after I first met Jason and went over to his house, I thought Carol was Jason's sister—a secret sibling he never mentioned before—but she wasn’t. She had long dark brown hair and green eyes. She reminded me of Natalie Wood. Carol was a whole lot younger than Jason’s dad and looked like she had just stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine, complete with a trim figure that was well formed where it needed to be, and graceful. She kept up the house and did most of the driving. Carol worked as a real estate agent. Carol was nice all right, but nonetheless she made me nervous whenever I was around her for some reason. I never knew quite why—she just did.
