ONE The Frodsham Cave, in Cheshire (North West England), has four entrances: three of which are all about shoulder-high when you get right up to them, and fairly square-cut. Their spooky blackness… They used to frighten me as a child looking up from the road. There they’d always be; gaping horribly over a valley-side: while to the right – beyond that sound of crows, another sandstone crag is lost behind a tree and gorse-covered rise. In the previous autumn (2003) I was guided over that rise by the serpentine curving twists of a so-called ‘Dragon’ sweeping in from the West. Up through a small wood – up the steep bracken-choked incline: until at last the second sandstone crag threatened me with its secret embrace. There I watched the fields and woods of Cheshire tumble from a grassy shelf under the crag’s wrinkled and weathered foot.
