Author’s Note to Second Edition
When the U.S. bishops complained to the Obama Administration in the winter of 2012 that its rules on health care insurance covering birth control were "in violation of church teaching" (and therefore an intrusion by the government on “religious freedom”), they looked like a bunch of Rip Van Winkles, waking up to the reality of a world they were not equipped to understand.
It was as if they had slept through the revolution brought on by the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, then, blinking hard at a strange landscape, started grabbing for their mitres and croziers to make a show of power.
