I’ve always looked at maps as (im)possibilities: roads with links to towns; oases that make the improbable passable; war-torn lands as obstacles; countries too poor, or too developed, to have useful transport; towns I’ve heard of, vaguely, but can’t tell you little about. The Sahara is full of these ‘what ifs’.
