Part One: Cal
Cal first saw the girl at the edge of the road. He was sitting by the window on the bus, staring outside at the trees rolling past. And there was the girl, standing there at the edge of the tarmac. She was with a couple of others, but Cal only noticed her.
She was Celtic-looking, curly dark hair framing her pale face. Even at a distance her green eyes struck him, meeting his briefly before the bus was gone into the woods. Cal sat up and tried to look back and catch her again, but the girl was gone. He slumped back into his seat. Around him, the bus was raucous. Cal's classmates were singing and throwing things, by in large leaving him to his thoughts.
Cal was sick of not having a girlfriend. He found himself sizing up girls wherever he went. He saw them in town, in giggling groups, outside the school. Whenever he saw one of his friends with a girl he felt heavy with jealousy. He knew guys who could seduce a girl with a few words, but somehow it never seemed to work for him. To Cal, girls were an enigma.
