The following novel is the Smashwords published edition
Jack gave the creature one last frantic push to try to get the beast off him as he stood helplessly pinned against a tree, but it was futile. The struggle had gone on for several minutes now and the end was approaching. Jack Santone had not planned on dying today. It wasn’t on the camping itinerary. He definitely had not planned to be mauled and pummeled into his final seconds on earth by a creature that was not supposed to exist.
That last push, the final frantic effort that a human puts forth in an attempt to put off the sweep of the grim reaper’s beckoning hand, had only angered the beast. Its big black glossy eyes bulged, filled with the fire within its devilish spirit as it grabbed Jack by the shoulders. It’s huge arms hoisted him high above its head as it studied and relished the terror in Jack’s eyes for a brief moment, then it whipped itself around 180 degrees and heaved him far back into the woods.
A year had gone by since Jack had retired from the Seattle Police Force and he had joyfully moved near the Gifford National Forest. A long career of chasing the bad guys had come to an end and that long awaited entrance into the land of blissful retirement filled with endless fishing and camping excursions had begun.
