Grass tickles my bare arms and the sun warms my skin. The wind carries the scent of ash and wood and… something else. Could be the remains of a house, a roast pig, or the remains of my city.
Cory nuzzles his head against my chest, his scruffy hair tickling my chin. I wrap my arms around him. His starched shirt has lost its stiffness. All the running and hiding, vanishing into bushes when helicopters soar above us… it’s left its mark. Cory’s face is smeared with dirt and dried blood, but as I trace my fingers along the edge of his chin, he smiles.
