Introduction:

One skill all students will need is the ability to effectively write for academic purposes. This guide is a nuts and bolts approach to the tools students will need to successfully write an academic essay. While this is written with a school-aged audience in mind, the tools provided here will be beneficial to anyone hoping to refresh or improve their academic writing skills, regardless of their age. This book will walk the writer through the entire process of academic writing, starting with the task of choosing a topic and ending with how to get the most out of the feedback given by an instructor.

Topic Choices

Timed writing with a given topic

Often in academic settings, students are given topics over which to write. This includes timed essays, such as in a college course and for college entrance exams, as well as topics for a research essay. If students are given a topic, there are several steps the students can take to make their approach to these topics as effective as possible. If the student is writing in a timed environment, be sure to keep track of the time. This way the writer is not caught by surprise.
