I want to dedicate this book to my daughter Steffanie, who at 16 had jaw surgery and had her jaws wired shut for six weeks. I’m sorry that I didn’t fully understand just how difficult it was for you and didn’t take the time to experiment with different foods. I guess that it’s pay-back time for me now that I’ve had my own jaw surgery and not able to eat “real food” for at least 3 months.

I want to be absolutely clear that I’m not a nutritionist, nor any type of medical person who can give advice on the nutrients that you are supposed to consume daily, especially if you are dealing with a medical problem. I’m just someone who has had jaw surgery and found it incredibly difficult to come up with things to eat that are not boring and bland. If you have just been told that you or someone in your family will have to go on a liquid diet, your initial reaction might be panic. “But what can I eat?” will be the first question that pops into your head, especially if you don’t or don’t like to cook. Whether it’s for medical reasons or because you want to detox and jump-start a diet, (which I do not recommend) the changes in your diet will be dramatic.
