“A Bedtime Myth”

It is a dark February evening. A heavy snow is falling over the heart of a quiet country valley. All the branches of the trees in this valley droop to the ground, heavy with snow. The silence is absolute. Every light in every house in the little valley is dark under the weight of the night's sleepy hour, all of them, save one. This lone light burns quietly in the master bedroom of a small one-story house. A haggard looking middle-aged man paces the floor. His eyes are vacant and sad. His beard is unshaven, and graying. His hands absently twist the small, tarnished wedding band wrapped around his ring finger.
