Identity Thief

By Georgiann Baldino

“Robert Downey, Jr.” got upset. I call him that because I don’t know the fellow’s real name and dare not ask, but he reminds me of the actor because Robert is handsome, has survived bizarre escapades and now has to prove he is no longer a danger to himself and society. Last night’s tirade didn’t further Robert’s cause. It sounded like someone came after him with a whip. Everyone in the ward heard him shriek, maybe everyone in the hospital.

The aides blamed me. “See what you’ve done!”

But I did nothing — the aides were the ones yelling. They got abusive, always do, when I roll away from a syringe. I occupy the bed against the wall and Robert sleeps next to me, so he sees the way they treat me, and it upsets him. Their obscenities set Robert off, and then they had to deal with him — clean up the emotional fallout. They tied me down and rushed to his bed. For three minutes he wailed, until a needle went into his vein.
