It was just past five o’clock, and Tom Nelson was exhausted. It had been a long, busy day. He had been up since four o’clock that morning. He just wanted to get back to his motel, eat a quick dinner, take a shower and then go to bed. He had to get up early the next morning, so that he could fly home and see his daughter.
Tom was a sales rep for a medical supply company. He lived in Indianapolis, but his job had him traveling all over the country. His sales territory used to be the Midwest, but because he was a top salesman, with higher sales that anyone else, he was transferred to the Southwest, to help boost sales there. The new promotion came with a nice raise.
Tom discussed the new job with his wife; Kate, and his daughter Amber, but they both knew that he had already made up his mind. Tom told his family that it would only be for a year at the most, and then he would be promoted to management, and work out of the home office in Indianapolis.
Because Kate and Amber didn’t want to move out west, Tom decided to live in hotel rooms during the week, and fly home on weekends.
The one year that Tom had promised his family, had turned into two years and after one too many compromises, Kate filed for a legal separation. Now, when Tom returned home, he lived in a motel room there as well.
