Heart of Iron

They always offered Max cigarettes. As if he wanted to see anything on fire ever again in his entire life. His face and voice stony, having refused the offered cigarette, he told his story to the third Army psychiatrist in as many weeks, in the third English hospital he had been admitted to since the fire.

“Flames burned the men into shapes, arms bent up as if to shield their faces, torsos curled like edges of paper, legs folded into Z's. Made them stiff and black like iron scuplture, and the iron lines my insides, too.” But this time he added something new. “I know it wasn't my fault. I couldn't save them. I knew the plane would blow up.” And it did, before he could get to them.
