An oak tree placed carefully in the mouth of the freshly dug ground as nurserymen held it upright and others shoveled the dirt to cover the ball. No sooner in the ground and standing tall, 12 black birds flew to rest in the high branches of what came to be known as Grandma's Tree. The year 1982, the day of the planting of Grandma's Tree was the day of her funeral. The Oak still stands and bends with the wind. Its roots are deep and dug in. The years of seasons have broken large branches as high winds do to limbs what high winds do, to Oaks stretched tall. My husband has tended the Oak all these years. When it is wounded he gets the ladder and past the last step he climbs on the branches to apply a mixture to seal its wounds. Through the years I too have learned much about strength and determination and how to bend with the wind instead of fighting against it.
