I remember when I was nine years old, my mother and I used to watch old movies, sometimes well into the night. Classics like Singing in the Rain, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and My Fair Lady. I remember being star struck with the actors, enamored by the dazzling stories of true and quirky romance and the ever popular “happily ever after” concept of old film.
I think I was 13 when I finally realized it was all bogus. My first year in middle school forced me to realize real life and film were two very different things, and more often than not your dreams could be easily crushed by that stifling reality.
I think…I think it broke me, in a way, to realize life was so much different, so harsh and unfair. I drifted through school like a specter, the one kid no one ever noticed because she always had her face in a book and her head in the clouds.
