Adelia packed her remaining things, leaving only the smallest necessities, like her hairbrush, that she would need before the planned departure. After checking the bags and fastening the last strap, she sat down for a cup of tea in her favorite spot in front of the arched window overlooking the gardens.

Part of her still couldn’t believe it was her last evening in Rosendoll. The decision to leave had been made long ago, though the departure date had been postponed several times. She knew she shouldn’t delay any longer, and yet… it still felt too soon. She could remember the day she had arrived as if it were just yesterday. What a happy young bride she had been! Nervous, apprehensive, even fearful to a degree, and already a little homesick, but she had been happy nonetheless. Adelia smiled sadly, shaking her head at her young self, recalling how she’d first stepped through the ornately carved stone gate and marveled at the white marble palace, crystal clear ponds, sparkling fountains, and fragrant nordella flowers that emanated soft blue light. She still marveled at it all; she never took any of it for granted.
