Deputy Sheriff Jack Herschel eyed the leaning tower of paperwork on his desk. Any moment, someone was likely to walk in and pile another folder on top of it, and the whole thing would slump and give way, like a landslide. The precinct needed another deputy or two to help deal with the work, but it didn’t seem likely with county budgets strapped as usual. He and his fellow deputies were all there were. Sometimes he wished he could clone himself.
