Chapter One

It is one of the most awe-inspiring yet hope-killing sound any human could ever hear; the replacement of a true sun by a Malsun. Though I have witnessed such an event ten times in the past three years, repetition does nothing to dampen the visceral nature of the experience. It lasts only a few brief seconds; a shockwave thunders out from the sun's periphery, a massive whirlpool engulfs the solar mass just as the meta-constructed toroid thumps into existence, spinning violently, wrenching an identical solar mass into the universe with it. The Malsun pulses into existence, breaking through the dimensional divide, breeching the surface of the brane of the universe. Hungrily it devours its twin, ingesting its stellar matter in a massive, turbulent whirlpool, devouring in seconds the nuclear core. If you blink you might miss it, for in so short a span of time the sun of the densely-populated planet Diolan was in an instant, sentient.
