Calvin Landry sits in his truck, nervously waiting on a bus to arrive. The boys’ basketball coach at Parsons Castle High has signed his school up to participate in a large basketball tournament, which will bring girls teams from across the country to South Arkansas.
Most of the teams are coming from out-of-state, which means area schools have to serve as hosts for the out-of-towners while they compete. Each area school will host a team; bring them into their classrooms, lunch rooms and gymnasiums for the better part of a week. At night, the teams will compete in school gyms around the county.
The tournament, billed simply as Southern Elite, will be a grand undertaking, which requires the cooperation of all the schools in this Arkansas county, located 15 minutes from the Louisiana border. As the architect of the tournament, Calvin is ready to do his fair share and a lot more. This includes volunteering Parsons Castle’s services as a host school. It also includes waiting for the arrival of a team he has never heard of, which is bussing to Arkansas from Virginia.
