I was out of a job for twelve weeks and considering prostitution as a viable alternative when all this weird shit happened. Talk about your low points: Ten dollars left in the bank (about enough to buy a Triple Boost at Luna's—she stopped giving me credit a month ago), my third eviction notice, and a text from my current boyfriend starting with “Dear Skye, it's not you, it's me . . . .” which pissed me off so bad I threw my ear shell in the toilet.

Port Jefferson is not a forgiving city for someone who is broke. It's a sprawling, expensive, rabbit warren of a station, where tourists pick up solar cruises and spend their trust fund dollars in high-end restaurants, like the one I used to wait tables in.
